I have always been puzzled why, when times get tough and budgets need to be cut, boards often look at cutting or eliminating altogether the staff training and education line item. To me, this would be one of the last things I would ever cut or eliminate out of the budget.
Training and education can pay big dividends to the chamber. It is amazing to see how some chambers invest so little (or nothing at all) in the training or education of their staff.
Nearly 30 percent of chambers invest $1,000 or less in staff training and education, which I think is pretty sad.
As it was in 2004, membership development and retention is the main area where chamber executives and staff believe they need further training, followed by new technologies (61 percent), website management (55 percent) and communication techniques (47 percent).
Cost of training and the program agenda remain the two top reasons cited by executives when determining whether to send staff to a training session.
